Why Hong Kong has no postal codes

Filling in an export document or an online order form, you may stop at a Hong Kong address: there is no number for the postal-code box. Hong Kong is one of the few places in the world that has never run an official postal code system.

Postal codes were born in 19th-century London to speed up mail sorting; Korea introduced them in 1970 and moved to its current five-digit system in 2015. Hong Kong, compact and dense, concluded around 2000 that mail could be delivered reliably without codes and shelved the idea. Neighbouring Macao has none either.

For mail sent from mainland China, the nominal codes 999077 (Hong Kong) and 999078 (Macao) exist, but they are rarely used locally.

Practical tip: when a system insists on a postal code, fillers such as 000, 0000 or HKG are commonly used. What matters on Hong Kong-bound documents is the district, street and building name — write those accurately.
