FCL vs LCL: how to choose for your ocean shipment

Ocean freight moves either as FCL (Full Container Load), where one shipper uses a whole container, or as LCL (Less than Container Load), where cargo from several shippers shares one container. Which is better depends on volume, cost, transit time and the nature of the cargo.

The most common containers are 20-foot and 40-foot. Internal volume is about 33 CBM for a 20-foot, about 67 CBM for a 40-foot and about 76 CBM for a 40-foot high cube. Because of carton shapes and stowage, the usable volume is lower; a 20-foot is usually taken as 25 to 28 CBM. With heavy cargo, the weight limit set by the container, carrier and road rules can be reached before the volume, so check it in advance.

The charging basis also differs. FCL is priced per container, while LCL is charged on whichever is greater: the cargo's volume in CBM or its weight, with 1,000 kg counting as one revenue ton. LCL also carries warehouse (CFS) charges for consolidating and deconsolidating the cargo at both origin and destination.

As a rule of thumb, once volume goes beyond about 15 CBM, the total cost of a 20-foot FCL often matches or undercuts LCL. The break-even point varies with route, season and rate levels, so when the volume is borderline, the most reliable approach is to get both quotes and compare.

Transit time and handling matter as well as cost. LCL needs time to consolidate and split cargo, so it can take a few days longer than FCL, and because the cargo is handled more often, packing needs to be robust. Cargo with demanding quarantine or customs rules, such as food or fresh flowers, may face limits on sharing a container, so FCL or a dedicated service is worth considering; chilled and frozen cargo moves in temperature-controlled reefer containers.

On the KALTSTART website, the instant quote shows 20-foot and 40-foot FCL reference rates for listed routes straight away. LCL depends on the size and weight of the cargo, so we handle it through a detailed quote, and for cargo that needs quarantine or customs clearance we advise on the documents too. After booking, you can follow the vessel's position and schedule in Track Cargo.
